Personal security awareness is the single best self defense strategy for personal defense. Statistical studies show that assaults occur mostly in the early morning or late in the evening, so acting on this information will increase your personal security and safety. Pepper spray protection is not only for assaults from two legged predators, but the best repellent for the four legged variety too. Dog attacks in particular are extremely common on a daily basis, but given less attention in the media. Just how common are dog attacks?

Got Pepper Spray?

The US Animal Humane Society reports that every year 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs, from a minor nip to a major dog attack. This doesn’t mention the countless other victims of the terror experience from a chasing dog. Does anyone remember Stephen King’s movie Cujo? Here is a short clip that will make you think “I want Pepper Spray”. It has been suggested that there is a dog bit epidemic in the United States. With almost 5 million victims annually, that is almost 2 percent of the entire population. There are 800,000 people that need medical attention annually, and 1,000 per day needing treatment in hospital emergency rooms. The annual human death count is the USA is over 30.

Pepper Spray is an inflammatory agent. It will induce coughing, chocking and nausea, as well as dilating the eye capillaries resulting in temporary blindness. The mucous membranes of the nose and throat will swell to prevent all but life support breathing causing the assailant to be temporarily incapacitated. A one second burst of pepper spray can stop an attacker for up to 45 minutes without causing permanent damage. Animals have a highly evolved sense of smell, so you can imagine how effective a shot of pepper spray will be when you aim for the animals head. A Tale of Road Rage and Pepper Spray Protection

Parking lots can be a hotbed of road rage activity. Have you ever had a problem in a parking lot over who has dibs on a parking space first? Yea, especially when the driver in question wants to cut in from the wrong direction. First off, some background on road rage studies.

A recent Gallup poll reported that motorists were more worried about road rage (42%) than about drunk driving (35%). –NY Times. The problem is national in scope, not just a phenomenon of congested urban areas. Key triggers of road rage appear to be the result of feeling rushed, speeding, or being in traffic. Aggressive driving behaviors include tailgating, changing lanes without using a signal, talking on cell phones while driving , running red lights, honking the horn and using angry or obscene gestures at other drivers.

Aggressive driving is thought to be a major factor in 50% of auto crashes.

Aggressive driving according to the AAA estimates a compound growth rate of 7%. Road rage has been showing steady growth since the cited studies above, so it’s even more important today to be prepared to protect yourself while driving your car both on the road and in a parking lot.

Being safe in your car can be as simple as keeping a cool head and setting a good example, however, for one of my pepper spray customers this wasn’t enough to make the aggressive driver go away. Competition for parking spaces when time is short can trigger aggressive behavior in several forms. When a driver that is experiencing road rage leaves his vehicle to run over and give you a piece of their mind, or worse, wants to get physical; you need to be prepared. You could be boxed into a space where you can’t leave the area, and yes you may have your cell phone, but how soon will help arrive? A recent incident that was reported to me was just such an event. The road raged driver pounded on the victim’s car while yelling obscenities and gesturing for the driver to come out of their car to fight.

The intended victim of the road raged attacker managed to lower his window down enough so that the angered driver would come closer to the opened window, and that is when the pepper spray was discharged though the car window and into the facial area of the attacker. The attacker immediately started cursing less and began coughing more while the pepper spray worked inflaming the mucus tissues in the eyes and throat of the attacking driver. The potential victim of someone’s road rage was now able to pull safely around the attacker and leave the area. This was a good example of pepper spray protection to the rescue. Personally, I don’t leave home without pepper spray in my car…you might consider it too.

There are many reasons women should carry pepper spray. Your personal safety is the most important thing. Today you need to think about educating yourself about personal safety, learning moves that might help save your life, become aware of your surrounding, escaping, fighting back, and other things such as learning about non-lethal weapons that can help save you.

Many women often have a bad feeling about something initially and they continue to move forward with what they are doing. If you have a bad feeling about a person or a situation it is important to trust that feeling. Any time that you feel unsafe in a situation you need to remedy your feeling. Your intuition is usually right and if you feel unsafe, even for just a second, you probably are.

Be Aware of your Environment!

Escaping is important. You don’t want a stranger to take you into a dark alley or shove you into the trunk of a car. You may never make it home to your family again. If you are in a public place and a stranger tells you to come with them or they will kill you it is important to yell and fight back now. This will be your only chance. The person most likely won’t kill you in public but when they get you wherever it is they want to take you they probably will.

Pepper spray is the best way to distract a predator from hurting you in public. You can spray them in the face. Pepper spray is very distressing to experience which makes it a great self defense weapon. Never let anyone touch you or invade your space and if you feel threatened you can spray them with your pepper spray and use it as a chance to get away.
