Walking and Jogging Safety Tips

by pepp2275 on July 15, 2012

A female student jogging in the same park in San Diego area a few months before the Chelsea King incident, was tackled along the trail that winds around lake. Later, this student identified her attacker as the same guy arrested for the murder of Chelsea King. “I thought he was going to rape me,” the student said of the overweight man who tackled her. “So I told him he would have to kill me first.”

Walking and Jogging Safety

What ensued was the raw determination of a women who was hell bent on saving her life. The attacker got all the adrenaline pumped fighting fury from the student jogger, including an elbow strike to the nose. This elbow shot made the attacker pause long enough for the student to get away.

Why Pepper Spray Protection for Women

Why Pepper Spray Protection: Reasons Why
Woman Should Carry Pepper Spray
by
Bill Valentine, PhD, Self Defense Coach

There are many reasons women should carry pepper spray. Your personal safety is the most important thing. Today you need to think about educating yourself about personal safety, learning moves that might help save your life, become aware of your surrounding, escaping, fighting back, and other things such as learning about non-lethal weapons that can help save you.

Many women often have a bad feeling about something initially and they continue to move forward with what they are doing. If you have a bad feeling about a person or a situation it is important to trust that feeling. Any time that you feel unsafe in a situation you need to remedy your feeling. Your intuition is usually right and if you feel unsafe, even for just a second, you probably are.

Be Aware of your Environment!

Escaping is important. You don’t want a stranger to take you into a dark alley or shove you into the trunk of a car. You may never make it home to your family again. If you are in a public place and a stranger tells you to come with them or they will kill you it is important to yell and fight back now. This will be your only chance. The person most likely won’t kill you in public but when they get you wherever it is they want to take you they probably will.

Pepper spray is the best way to distract a predator from hurting you in public. You can spray them in the face. Pepper spray is very distressing to experience which makes it a great self defense weapon. Pepper Spray will induce coughing, choking and nausea, as well as dilating the eye capillaries resulting in temporary blindness. The mucous membranes will swell to prevent all but life support breathing causing the assailant to be temporarily incapacitated. You will gain precious time to get away safely.

Pepper spray is one of the most important things you can have on you at all times as a woman in the world today. It is a sad truth that you cannot trust your environment anymore. You must be aware of your surroundings at all times. Never let anyone touch you or invade your space and if you feel threatened you can spray them with your pepper spray and use it as a chance to get away.

In view of recent attacks on joggers, everyone that is currently enjoying that sport needs to be aware of certain crime prevention tips geared exclusively to them. These safety tips can apply to anyone that is on the street walking, jogging, or running.

Many joggers have the mistaken idea that because they usually do not carry large sums of money with them as they jog, they are not likely candidates for an attack. Unfortunately, that is not true. They must always be aware of their surroundings and take appropriate action to protect themselves.

One of the most serious problems for joggers is not paying attention. They become so preoccupied with the physical act of jogging that they lose touch with the moment. They are so busy concentrating on how much further they have to go and on putting one foot in front of the next, that they don’t pay attention to what is happening right here, right now.

When they allow themselves to become preoccupied, they have jeopardized their security. When they are not paying attention, it gives the would-be attacker the opportunity to surprise them. Being alert and being aware is vital at all times.

First-up are Basic Safety Tips for Jogging:

* Jog with a known companion
* Jog in a familiar area
* Do not jog in a secluded area
* Do not jog after dark
* Jog facing the traffic
* If followed, go to the nearest house and call the police
* Wear bright colored clothing to improve your visibility
* Carry a pepper spray or a personal safety alarm device
* Vary your route and pattern of running
* Always be aware of your surroundings. Keep Alert!
* Jog away from bushes where someone could hide
* Take a key with you when you jog. Don’t leave your house unlocked. Someone might be watching you and your house to see when it will be empty or unlocked.

Advance Safety Tips for Jogging and Walkers:

* One of the first things men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
( An extreme example by an orca recently, a female trainer in Florida was drowned by a killer whale that grabbed the woman by her ponytail!)

* Offenders are most likely to attack and rape in the early morning, between 5:00a.m. and 8:30a.m.

* Only 2% of the predators said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence, but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years.

* If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.

* The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

* Offenders look for women on their cell phone, searching through their purse, or doing other activities while walking because they are off-guard and can be easily overpowered.

* The number one place women are abducted from or attacked is from grocery store parking lots. Number two is office parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms.

* The thing about predator men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to another location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

* If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell, “STOP” or “STAY BACK!”. Most rapists said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

* If you carry pepper spray (this instructor is a huge advocate of it), yell, “I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY” while holding it out can be a powerful deterrent.

* Lastly, not all male joggers are running for their health, so always be careful.

Road Rage is not limited to only highway driving. Parking lots can be a hotbed of road rage activity. Have you ever had a problem in a parking lot over who has dibs on a parking space first? Yea, especially when the driver in question wants to cut in from the wrong direction. First off, some background on road rage studies.

A recent Gallup poll reported that motorists were more worried about road rage (42%) than about drunk driving (35%). –NY Times. The problem is national in scope, not just a phenomenon of congested urban areas. Key triggers of road rage appear to be the result of feeling rushed, speeding, or being in traffic. Aggressive driving behaviors include tailgating, changing lanes without using a signal, talking on cell phones while driving , running red lights, honking the horn and using angry or obscene gestures at other drivers.

Road Rage and Pepper Spray Protection

Aggressive driving is thought to be a major factor in 50% of auto crashes.

Aggressive driving according to the AAA estimates a compound growth rate of 7%. Road rage has been showing steady growth since the cited studies above, so it’s even more important today to be prepared to protect yourself while driving your car both on the road and in a parking lot.

Being safe in your car can be as simple as keeping a cool head and setting a good example, however, for one of my pepper spray customers this wasn’t enough to make the aggressive driver go away. Competition for parking spaces when time is short can trigger aggressive behavior in several forms. When a driver that is experiencing road rage leaves his vehicle to run over and give you a piece of their mind, or worse, wants to get physical; you need to be prepared. You could be boxed into a space where you can’t leave the area, and yes you may have your cell phone, but how soon will help arrive? A recent incident that was reported to me was just such an event. The road raged driver pounded on the victim’s car while yelling obscenities and gesturing for the driver to come out of their car to fight.

The intended victim of the road raged attacker managed to lower his window down enough so that the angered driver would come closer to the opened window, and that is when the pepper spray was discharged though the car window and into the facial area of the attacker. The attacker immediately started cursing less and began coughing more while the pepper spray worked inflaming the mucus tissues in the eyes and throat of the attacking driver. The potential victim of someone’s road rage was now able to pull safely around the attacker and leave the area. This was a good example of pepper spray protection to the rescue. Personally, I don’t leave home without pepper spray in my car…you might consider it too.

Here is a unique combination of pepper sprays in one package that will protect you at home, dorm, in the car or on your person.
